Now we're in Merida - a city of probably 500,000 in Northern Yucatan. Every Sunday,
the center of the town is a giant Fiesta - all the plazas are closed to traffic, and
there's live music all day long. Salsa, Mariachi, brass bands, folksingers - you name it.
Everyone comes to the center to dance, and shop at the small craft stands that are set up. At night, they finish off with a number of traditional Mexican dances. Above, you can see (or not - sorry) about 12 couples doing a classic maypole dance. This is an extremely bad picture of me and Marilena from Argentina - off backpacking central America between semesters. |
Just a few more ruins
