Isla Mujeres - a small (eight km) island about 12 miles offshore
from Cancun. At the northern end is a very touristy little village, where
thousands of people come across by ferry every day. Because I flew in
and out of Cancun (but had exactly 0 interest in seeing it), I wound up
here at the end (close to the airport, basically).
At the southern end is next to nothing. I paid a local restaurant about $2 a night to hang my hammock on the beach. There were a couple of Americans who winter down here, in tents or cabanas on the beach. Every morning, they go spear fishing for their breakfast (which they very graciously shared with me). So, my last day, I woke up at sunrise, and took a walk to the lighthouse you cant quite see here. Then, a swim in the ocean around 8. Fresh fish at 10:00, with some lime, onion and tomato. Then, a desperate scramble to catch my 12:00 flight (*an hour and a half from the island...*). I fell in love with Mexico, in case you can't tell. It's a magical place. I think I know where you'll find me next winter...
