This is the arch over the Mihrab. The Mihrab, which is small semi-circular chamber below this arch, both indicates the direction of Mecca (and thus of prayer), and amplifies the voice of the imam - the prayer leader.

It's rare to see the inside of a mosque, because most of them are in use, and it's considered an insult to simply "wander in."
